Bjarg, Grænt húsnæði ehf, Dumli ehf

A new zoning plan for the Met Office site provides over 200 apartments on the Met Office floor for a diverse group of citizens.

The landowners are Grænt húsnað ehf, Dumli ehf, and Bjarg. After brainstorming the zoning plan, it was decided to continue working on it with a proposal from the Danish-Icelandic design firm Lendager.

Lendager called the proposal Hringrásarborg (Circular City), a neighbourhood designed with natural, organic materials and local waste materials collected in the capital area, and with reuse in mind (existing buildings and soil that will remain in place and be used to shape a new landscape). The concept is to create a neighbourhood that resonates with the coming zeitgeist, a neighbourhood that is not only sustainable but also recreates natural cycles, thereby becoming a living and renewable area that can adapt and develop over time.

The architecture and infrastructure will be designed to maximize the use of local organic materials such as wood, stone and turf, which are resistant to harsh weather conditions and can be easily replaced or reused. At the same time, the goal is to utilize construction waste to further minimize environmental impact.
